Realism uses tone, proportion and texture to give a subject a lifelike appearance. In black and grey work, the contrast between dark areas, softer shading and open skin helps create that depth.
The starting point might be an animal, a figure or a darker, more surreal idea. It could stand alone or become part of a larger composition. What matters is giving the subject enough space and choosing an artist whose work matches the direction you want.
Have a look at the portfolios below. A style label is useful, but the work itself will tell you more about each artist's approach.
Meet Harvey and Saul
Harvey specialises in black and grey realistic tattoos. He has around seven years of tattooing experience, completed his apprenticeship in Bournemouth and studied Fine Art at Southampton Solent University.
He is particularly drawn to surreal and darker realism, animals and the human figure. If you like those subjects but haven't worked out the full design, his approach is collaborative: bring the idea and discuss how it could become a tattoo.
Saul works across several styles and names realism as his favourite. He has eight years of tattooing experience and particularly enjoys full arm sleeves, leg sleeves and back pieces.
For a larger realism project, browse Saul's portfolio alongside our sleeves and large-scale tattoos page. If you already know which artist you prefer, mention their name in your enquiry.
Choose a subject, then give the detail room
The right size depends on what needs to remain readable. Fur, facial features, folds and other fine details need enough space to separate from one another. A drawing that looks clear on a large screen may need simplifying or enlarging when planned as a tattoo.
Placement is part of that discussion. We'll consider the shape of the area and how the composition sits on your body, rather than treating the image as a flat rectangle.
You do not need to make every decision before you contact us. Bring the subject, the mood you like and a rough idea of where you want it. Your consultation is the place to work through the options.
Bring useful reference photographs
Clear photographs make it easier to discuss the details that matter. Choose the sharpest images you have, with the subject easy to see and without heavy filters. If several images show different details, bring those too.
If you're considering a portrait or pet portrait, ask whether Harvey or Saul is the right match for that particular subject before settling on a booking. Those ideas need a conversation about reference quality, size and suitability rather than a promise from a photograph alone.
You can email reference images to bettercallsaul.tattoos@gmail.com. Include the approximate size and placement so the images have some context.
Your consultation, quote and appointment
Consultations are free at our Wilton studio. We'll discuss the idea and the proposed scale, then explain the quote and booking process. More complex or larger work may need a series of sessions; the plan depends on your piece.
Pricing depends on size, detail and placement. A minimum charge applies, and a non-refundable deposit secures your booking and comes off the final price. Ask for the current deposit and booking terms before paying. You'll receive full aftercare instructions after your tattoo appointment.

Your Realism Artists
Realism Tattoo FAQs
Realism focuses on lifelike subjects, shading and texture. Blackwork is a broader direction centred on black ink, often with a more graphic use of shape and contrast. If you're drawn to both, show your artist examples of what you like.
Yes. Harvey specialises in black and grey realistic tattoos, and realism is one of Saul's main interests. Their portfolios are the best starting point for choosing an artist.
It depends on the subject and detail. Some ideas need more room than others to stay clear. Send the reference and your proposed size so the artist can discuss whether it needs simplifying or enlarging.
There is no standard number for every realism tattoo. A standalone piece and a full sleeve are different projects. We'll discuss the scale and likely session plan during the consultation.
We quote after discussing your idea, size and placement. Send the subject or reference images and your rough dimensions, and we'll talk through the design and cost with you.
