Blackwork is a broad term for tattoo designs made with black ink. It can use strong outlines, filled shapes, pattern or open skin as part of the composition. It is not limited to one subject or one size.
If you like a more graphic look, blackwork is worth exploring. The balance between dark areas and the spaces around them can be as important as the subject itself.
At BcS, the best starting point is the artists' own work. Bring examples of the lines, contrast or shapes you like, then tell us what you want the piece to mean or feel like. We can discuss how those ideas might become a custom tattoo.
Meet your blackwork artists
Sophie specialises in blackwork, fine line and abstract pieces. She enjoys working with clients to build a design from their ideas and conversations, rather than expecting everyone to arrive with a finished drawing.
If you're interested in an abstract direction or want help turning several loose ideas into one piece, browse her portfolio and mention her name when you enquire.
Dana is our resident apprentice. She works in blackwork and high-contrast designs alongside fine line, traditional colour and Aztec-inspired work. She has been with the studio since it opened in March 2025.
Look through Dana's portfolio to see her current work, and ask about the ideas you'd like to explore with her.
Saul's portfolio also includes bold black-ink pieces, such as a sun-and-vine chest piece and a twin-snake stomach piece. If your blackwork idea is a larger project, mention him when you enquire.
Choose the scale and placement together
The amount of black in a design changes how it reads. A small graphic motif, a more open line-based piece and a heavily filled composition each need a different discussion about space.
Bring a rough size in centimetres and the area you are considering. If you are unsure, show us the placement and the examples you like. We can talk about which details to keep, simplify or give more room.
Think about the overall shape as well as the close-up detail. A tattoo needs to work at a glance and sit comfortably within the area it is designed for.
Blackwork, fine line or black and grey realism?
These labels can overlap, but they are useful ways to explain what draws you to a design. Fine line puts attention on lighter linework. Black and grey realism uses shading and texture to create lifelike subjects. Blackwork can take a more graphic approach to dark shapes and contrast.
You don't need to choose the perfect label before getting in touch. Show us what you like about each reference, whether it is the subject, the line weight or the balance of black and open space.
Blackwork is also not automatically a cover-up solution. If there is an old tattoo underneath the area you want to change, start with a separate cover-up assessment rather than assuming any black design will hide it.
Consultation, pricing and booking
Your consultation is free. We'll discuss your idea, size and placement and help you decide which artist to enquire with. You can bring reference images without having a finished design.
Prices depend on size, detail and placement, and a minimum charge applies. A non-refundable deposit secures your tattoo booking and is deducted from the final price. Ask for the current amount and terms before paying. You'll receive full aftercare instructions after your appointment.

Yes, a simple idea can work at a smaller scale. The right size depends on how much detail and contrast the design needs. We'll discuss that before you commit to a drawing that is too crowded for the space.
Yes. Tell us what you like about your references and the direction you want to take. Sophie particularly enjoys developing custom pieces through conversations with clients.
No. Black and grey realism is concerned with lifelike shading and texture. Blackwork is a broader black-ink direction and can be more graphic or abstract. Browse both portfolios if you're deciding between them.
It may be an option, but the old tattoo has to be assessed first. Its size, darkness and placement affect what is possible. Send a clear photograph and request a cover-up discussion with Saul.
